This small airport serving commercial airlines is located on the western side of the island of Hawaii. A significant part of it was built on the remains of lava rock that appeared as a result of the eruption of the Hualalai volcano in 1801. Lava erupted towards the ocean and extended the coast for almost 2 km inland. It was on this newly formed land area that Kona Airport was built in 1970. Experts have leveled lava flows and tunnels with explosives. The tropical style of the airport is popular with tourists and creates a feeling of pristine nature during takeoff and landing. In the airport complex, all facilities are located separately from each other and there are two runways, the length of which is suitable for receiving long-haul flights. A museum dedicated to Allison Onizuki, an astronaut born in Kona, who died in the explosion of the Challenger spacecraft, has been built on the airport grounds. The entrance to the museum is free. In 2017, the Airport changed its name to Allison Onizuka Kona International Airport in Kihole.
