Construction of an airport in New Orleans, Louisiana, to replace the small and outdated Shushan Airport, began in 1940. The new airport was originally named Moysant Field, in honor of aviation pioneer John Moisant, who died in a plane crash at the airport's location. Its identification code matches its old name - Moisant Stock Yards. Like many others during the Second World War, it served as a military airfield. But after the end of the war, he could not immediately return to his civilian duties, because after the hurricane Fort Lauderdale in 1947 was submerged half a meter under water. But even starting again commercial air transportation, this airport lagged sharply behind the airports of other major cities. The terminal building looked more like a hangar, the runway was outdated. And only ten years later, a new terminal was built, the airport underwent a grand modernization and received all the modern improvements available at that time. On the centenary of the birth of the famous musician, the airport was named after Louis Armstrong and his full name became New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport. Another natural disaster in 2005, the Atlantic hurricane Katrin, caused tremendous damage to the entire airport complex and restoration took several months. Today, Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans is one of the main in the state, it has one updated and expanded terminal, very spacious and bright, with four waiting rooms, two runways. About twenty airlines operate their flights from this airport, but mostly domestic. Exceptions are flights to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. On the territory of the terminal there are shops, restaurants, offices of rental companies and car rental counters. A new garage with 2,000 parking spaces has also been built. The shuttle service to the city is provided by buses with an express route and car rental offices, which are located on the south side of the airport. A rented car will give you freedom of movement and you can enjoy driving around the state of Louisiana, driving through the French Quarter of New Orleans, visiting its parks and museums. Just a couple of hours by car and you are on the beaches of Florida. Choosing New Orleans and its airport as the starting point of your trip, you can feel the unique spirit of this amazing city and the entire state of Louisiana.
